Hey, loc fam!
Summer’s almost here and vacation plans are secured in some of the best vacation spots! Whether you’ll be swimming in the ocean or an infinity pool, as a loc’d traveler, you’ll want to consider the following:
- How to protect your locs against salt water and other environmental factors
- How to keep your locs in great condition so you look and feel your best
- Which products you absolutely need to take with you so you’re not beating yourself up afterwards
Having a plan to keep your hair healthy and nourished while on vacation is essential. You’ll want to research weather conditions and whether you’ll have access to basic amenities like water and electricity in whichever location you find yourself. It’s also important to plan for downtime and delays. Anything can happen when you’re traveling and so the rule of thumb is always to prepare for the unexpected.
As you pack your bags to head off to your summer destination or create your list for what to include on your trip, make sure there’s room for the items below:
- A Moisturizing Shampoo. Swimming in a chlorine pool can leave your luscious locs all dried out. Being in the ocean isn’t any better, especially if you have sand in your hair. You’ll need a shampoo that moisturizes and conditions your hair after fun in the water. This is true for anyone with locs, regardless of gender.
- Headwear. Whether you refer to it as a head wrap, scarf, bonnet, or turban, you’ll want to have a cloth covering over your locs to keep them from getting dry or unraveled while you sleep. A satin or satin-lined material works best to retain moisture. You can go to the Locsanity website under the Headwear tab to find a wide range of options.
- Swimming Cap. This goes without saying but a swimming cap will help protect your hair from pool water and ocean water, both of which can strip your hair of its natural oils. We have Silicon Swimming Caps for your locs and braids.

- Essential Oils. The best way to prevent mildew after spending time in the water is using essential oils. Your natural oils are stripped away due to excessive moisture. The Rosewater and Pepperment Moisturizing Spray and Bold Moisturizing and Conditioning Daily Spray serve a dual purpose by adding the essential oils you need to your locs.
- A Good Read. Remember the downtime and delays we mentioned earlier? Well, nothing helps you pass the time like a good book. Whether you’re up in the air, stuck on a tarmac, or laying out on the beach or pool without a care in the world, a good book can be a lifesaver when you need solitude or to decompress. If you want to avoid bulk, get a waterproof and anti-glare e-reader. Some e-readers can go for up to 2 months on a single charge. If you’re not a fan of reading, have someone read it to you. You can start an Audible trial right before your trip, pick your favorite celebrity and then have them read their life story to you if their memoir or autobiography is in audiobook format.

Vacation Playlists. What’s a good vacation without a “fya” or exceptionally good playlist? Not one at all! Go ahead and start building out your tracklist so you’ll be more than ready by vacation time.
Another thing to note is that if you’re planning to vacation in humid climates, your hair will thank you. Humidity can add moisture to your natural hair, which is a plus.
